Sustainability

At Trevarefest we are committed to keeping the local environment in and around Henningsvær clean.

Grønn festival Nord (“Green Festival North”)

With the support from Musikkontoret i Nord, Trevarefest has over the years enforced their focus on green and sustainable initiatives and is a proud holder of the Green Festival North certification.

We work hard to improve each year, while acknowledging that there is still much more we can do.

The certification means we meet sustainability criteria across these five key areas

WASTE SORTING

During Trevarefest, it is crucial to have a well thought-through waste management and collection system for all main waste types. The categories are based upon the most waste intensive parts of the festival, food and beverage, and coordinated together with all departments of the festival.

At Trevarefest, we have several waste collection points where festival goers sort their waste into these waste types:

_ Single use plastic cups

_ Bottles & cans (“pant”)

_ Reusable hard plastic cups

_ Cardboard (clean & dry), e.g. pizza boxes

_ Food waste, including compostable single use plates and cutlery

_ General waste; what cannot be recycled

After the festival, all waste is re-sorted before it’s sent for recycling to ensure that the waste can be recycled as efficiently as possible. This is an amazing effort by the Green Team volunteers. They are also there to help all festival goers with tips for waste sorting — they’re always around and happy to help!

Plastic cups

Plastic cup fee

At Trevarefest we constantly work on limiting our plastic use, collecting and recycling as much plastics as possible, and reducing littering to nature. Therefore, we have implemented a plastic cup fee.The fee is used to purchase reusable plastic cups and other initiatives to reduce plastic use. Therefore, festival goers are directly helping to make Trevarefest more sustainable.

Trial project: reusable plastic cupsAs part of our ongoing efforts to reduce single-use plastic waste, in 2025 Trevarefest introduced reusable hard plastic cups in the outdoor bars. This initiative also aimed to minimize the risk of disposable cups ending up in the environment.

The reusable cups function like any other drinking cup and were returned to the bars after use to be washed and reused multiple times. The return and rewashing of the cups, also that festival goers did not take the cups out of the festival area or home, is crucial for the efficiency and environmental impact of these cups.

The trial project received positive feedback from both festival goers, staff and volunteers, in addition to reducing the amount of single use plastic cups. This means that Trevarefest will aim to expand the use of the reusable cups for next year’s festival.

Keeping Henningsvær clean

We acknowledge that arranging a festival in our small village of approx. 500 inhabitants brings several challenges, both for the inhabitants and nature. We therefore try to do out part to keep Henningsvær and the areas where people camp during the festival, like Festvåg, tidy and clean.

The crucial Green Volunteer Team volunteers works to tidy, not only the festival area, but also surrounding areas in Henningsvær during the days and nights of the festival. Additional waste bins are placed close to the festival area and in popular camping areas to make it easier for the audience to collect, throw and correctly sort waste for energy and material recycling.

We hope that this can help the local community and the audience to keep Henningsvær and the nature clean and happy.

Thanks for helping us keep it beautiful!
